1. Milwaukee Bucks
Team needs: Center, Small Forward, possibly point guard.
Reasons: The center position has been anything but a walk in the park for Milwaukee over the last few years. Dan Gadzuric has played well when he wasn't in foul trouble. Zaza Pachulia was a nice coup for the Bucks, but is a couple years away from giving them the production they need. Joel Przybilla was always injured. Now he found a home, temporarily, in Portland. As far as the 3 spot goes, Desmond Mason was more productive when he came off the bench and played alongside Redd and the now departed Keith Van Horn. He struggled as a starter, often having a tough time guarding bigger opponents. The point guard reasons were mentioned above.
They draft: Andrew Bogut, C, Utah, So.
Why?: To convince Redd that they are committed to having him as their franchise player. He is the most polished center in the draft. Offensively, he can play with his back to the basket or step out for the midrange jumper. Some people compare him to Van Horn, but only because of his size and ability to hit the college three. He has a better post game and is a better defender, at least at his position. Milwaukee may shock people with a pick like Williams, but Bogut is the answer for the Bucks' woes in the middle. If they resign Gadzuric and Pachulia, then they will have a very young and deep front court for years to come.
2. Atlanta Hawks
Team needs: Center, point guard.
Reasons: Tyronn Lue and Tony Delk and not a part of their future. They need a point guard to run their offense and help young guys like Donta Smith and Josh Smith develop. It has bee rumored that GM Billy Knight flew in Bogut's head coach at Utah for an extensive scouting report on Bogut. Also, the Hawks still hold the rights to center David Andersen, an Aussie who they drafted but kept overseas to develop. If they were to get Bogut, then having both him and Andersen would make their transition to the NBA easier.
Andersen recently play in the Euroleague Final Four with CSKA Moscow. But with Milwaukee holding the top spot down and in need of a big man, Knight may be out of luck with Bogut. With that said, the Hawks will take...
They draft: Chris Paul, PG, Wake Forest, So.
Why?: The glaring need of a point guard. Getting a great point guard like Paul, especially in such a deep point guard class will be key for their future. With a potentially great point guard like Paul, it gives the city of Atlanta a reason to come out to the games.
There will a lot of alley-oops, but there will be basketball worth watching. They can always get a bigman in free agency. Whoever they land, as well as Andersen, will be big upgrades compared to Obinna Ekezie and Jason Collier.
3. Portland Trailblazers
Team needs: PG, SG.
Reasons: As far as the draft goes, the Blazers will most likely go after a shooting guard. They will probably sign a veteran point guard to give Sebastian Telfair competition. Portland has depended on failed signings (Trenton Hassell) and vets. past their prime (Derek Anderson). A shooting guard that could play alongside Telfair for years to comes is the most likely solution. A center, like Martynas Andriuskevicius is possible because he has worked with and played alongside fan favorite Arvydas Sabonis, but drafting at #3 could be a reach. Marvin Williams seems like the obvious choice, but due to drafting Travis Outlaw two years ago and locking up the headcase Darius Miles kills any playing time Williams would get. He would only get decent minutes if Portland were to go small, playing him alongside Miles, a shooting guard and Telfair. So...
They draft: Gerald Green, SG, Gulf Shores Academy, HS Senior
Why?: Getting the next T-Mac to play alongside Telfair is too much to pass up. He has been getting comparisons to Tracy McGrady due to his athleticism and size, but has a better shot coming out of high school. A big plus for Portland, who missed the outside shot for much of last season. Green won't be able to produce immediately, but in two years, will be convincing people why he was rated so high coming out of high school. Winning the High School Dunk Contest and taking over the McDonald's All-Star Game raised his stock, and with Portland's new "Moneyball" system, basketball's equivalent to Billy Beane's system used for scouting, Green is the perfect fit for their future without risking a whole lot.
4. New Orleans Hornets
Teams Needs: PG, SF, C
Reasons: After trading Baron Davis, the Hornets were officially throwing in the towel. They didn't really need to since they were one of the worst teams in the league. With Davis leaving, there is a void at PG.
They got Speedy Claxton, and Dan Dickau stepped up to the point where they might offer him a new contract, so PG is out the question for the time being. But they desperately need a SF after having the likes of George Lynch, Boston Nachbar and Lee Nailon filling in for an injured Jamaal Mashburn. Byron Scott, due to some luck, still gets his man in...
They draft: Marvin Williams, SF, UNC, Fr.
Why?: Building for the future like these other teams in the lottery, Williams is the perfect fit to play alongside J.R. Smith for years to come. Williams has the ability to play inside when Smith's range is on point. When Smith takes it inside, Williams is able to hit the midrange jumper if he were to get the ball.
For a guy his size at 6'9, he has an underrated handle. His only knock on him for the time being is strength. Will he be able to handle the physical 3's like Marion, Bowen and Lewis? Once he adds strength and polishes his game, in a couple years, he and Smith will lead New Orleans into the playoffs for years and years to come.
5. Charlotte Bobcats
Team needs: PG, SG, SF
Reasons: Coming off a better-than-expected season, Charlotte was able to stay within games very late, but losing most of them. Point guard seems to be the most glaring need unless Gerald Wallace departs via free agency. It has been rumored that GM Bernie Bickerstaff would be willing to trade both of his lottery picks to be able to get Marvin Williams, a local (UNC) product and a potential All-Star at the small forward position. But for the sake of Williams already being drafted, the Bobcats will look at the best available player. But in order to draw in fans at the same time if they can't move up, then their best bet is...
They draft: Raymond Felton, PG, UNC, Ju.
Why?: Getting a local product will get a few more people in the new arena. It will also give Charlotte the option of running when Felton plays or running half-court sets when Knight, barring hes still with the team, plays. If knight is there, then he would be a prefect mentor for Felton. He can teach him when to use his speed and quickness to his advantage and when to slow it down so the Okafors and Brezecs can catch up. Felton lacks the size of a Deron Williams and a Jarrett Jack, but is a proven winner, exactly what the Bobcats want to help their franchise in the future.
6. Utah Jazz .
Team needs: PG, C.
Reasons: The Jazz got the short end of the stick, seeing two teams under them get a higher pick. Ever since John Stockton retired, Utah has been secretly wishing he wouldn't have. After trading Carlos Arroyo for nothing, the Jazz felt the impact when backup Raul Lopez was injured for the rest of the season, needing surgery to repair the healthier knee of his. Reserves Howard Eisley and Keith McLeod, both picked up off of free agency after the season started, are not long-term, even short-term solutions for the Jazz.
They need a point guard who can run an offense and give Kirilenko and Boozer some open looks with penetration. Lucky for the Jazz, they get the next Jason Kidd.
They draft: Deron Williams, PG, Illinois, Ju.
Why?: Why not? There isn't really anything negative to say about Williams. He's a rarity among point guards: a pass-first point with a shot and happy feet. He is willing to pass the ball, but under certain situations, like the shot against Arizona in the Final Four that tied the game, he can take the shot and make it. He's also an underrated defender, never letting his feet stop moving. Utah will return to prominence.
It'll just take a couple year because Sacramento isn't ready to call it quits and the emergence of Phoenix and Seattle as playoff contenders will make it hard for the Jazz to make the playoffs. If anyone can lead the way for them, it is Williams.
7. Toronto Raptors .
Teams needs: C, PG.
Reasons: Getting help for Chris Bosh down low is the number one concern. Bosh had to play with Rafael Araujo, Donyell Marshall and Matt Bonner in the front court for the season, hurting his overall play. He was again needed to play center when Araujo was foul-prone almost every single game. As far as building around Bosh goes, a young point guard couldn't hurt, either.
But with Rafer Alston and Alvin Williams under long-term deals, drafting a bigman becomes the top priority. So the the city of Toronto will cheer for...
They draft: Tiago Splitter, PF/C, Tau Vitoria, 20 yrs.
Why?: Getting a lock down post defender like Splitter is essential for Bosh's future. Splitter has the ability to not let any bigman score on him, willing to get physical on defense with the opponent. In the Final Four game against CSKA Moscow, when Splitter came in, their center, soon-to-be Hawk David andersen could not score on him. Offensively, his low-post game has been compared to Pau Gasol's. While it may not be as polished, from what I've seen, he's a little more physical in the paint, willing to throw his body in there to get himself an easier shot. It may be harder for him to get his shot off against most centers, it will only be for a year or so. Once he gets accustomed to the style of play in the NBA, then he will be a very nice compliment to Bosh.
8. New York Knicks .
Team needs: C, C, C.
Reasons: With a slew of undersized power forwards and no cap room for years to come, Isiah Thomas will look towards this draft and future drafts for help in the front court. Last year, Thomas drafted Trevor Ariza, which turned out to be a steal, and hes only 19 years old. The Knicks still have a little youth, but no cap room to go after a Kwame Brown this summer. It has been rumored that he could be a Knick for Kurt Thomas.
What could make this deal a tough one is that KT has a trade kicker in his contract. Washington may not be willing to pay for that. While everyone in New York will not tolerate a rebuilding project, there arent many ready-now bigmen available. The most ready is Fran Vasquez, but he's only an inch taller than Kurt Thomas, the Knicks' best power forward who was forced to play center after they dealt Nazr to San Antonio for Malik Rose. Chris Taft could be available, but why draft the next Kwame if you can get the actual Kwame in the summer?
They draft: Johan Petro, C, Pau Orthez, 18 yrs.
Reasons: Isiah sees something not many people may see: a bigger Marcus Camby. Petro is still very young, but he is very big for his size. He is very athletic, something very few centers have. He will take some patience, but once he's ready, he'll blossom. He can become a bigger Theo Ratliff, using his long arms to get to balls most centers would have a hard time blocking. He can also run the floor well for a player his size. Some Knick fans may not like this because of the first Frenchman they drafted: Freddy Weis. First off, Petro is a hundred times better at 18 than Weis was. Second, there is no Ron Artest in this draft that the Knicks would be passing up. Third, Petro would never let someone jump over him. The one problem could be that some people will chastise this pick because he is simply not ready right now. He also may have a buyout clause in his contract, as do most European players.
9. Golden State Warriors .
Team Needs: PF, SF, C.
Reasons: Golden State became a playoff contender for next season when they acquired Baron Davis from the Hornets for Claxton and Dale Davis. The Warriors became an unstoppable offense, even beating Phoenix at its own game twice after the trade. Their biggest hole is at center, where Adonal Foyle and Andris Biedrins, the Warriors' lottery pick last year, remain. This pick could be used for another center. However, picking a center would make last year's pick look like he was unwanted. And after watching him in spotty minutes late in the season, he is definitely wanted.
SF is another option, with Mike Dunleavy becoming a restricted free agent this summer. If he leaves, it would Mickael Pietrus and Jason Richardson to play the small forward position. The Warriors like Pietrus, but don't want to slide Richardson over if they don't have to. He would be the small forward when they went small with Derek Fisher coming off the bench, but that's the only time he would be a small forward. Also, with the departed Eduardo Najera, and the soon to be departed Nikilosz Tskitishvili, the Warriors power forward spot is fairly thin, as well. They have Troy Murphy and Zarko Cabarkapa, but if either of them were to be lost for the season with an injury, then their front court becomes even more depleted. With that said, Golden State will select...
They draft: Chris Taft, PF/C, Pittsburgh, So.
Why?: A kid with this much potential on both ends of the floor and with enough size to play either position is too hard to pass up. Another option could be the Spaniard Vasquez, but Taft has even more potential for the future. He can contribute defensively while honing his offensive game. He has a very good hook with either hand that's hard to block because he jumps so high. Once he improves his outside shot, he could become what Kwame Brown was supposed to become.
10. Los Angeles Lakers .
Team needs: PG, PF, C.
Reasons: The Lakers aren't supposed to be in the lottery. They were just in the Finals. But I guess that's the difference Shaq makes. To move on, the Lakers biggest hole was point guard. Chucky Atkins filled in nicely, but he's a backup point guard. He plays better in fewer minutes than what he had to deal with. The Lakers could some depth behind Chris Mihm and Lamar Odom. Brian Grant was injured for most of the season, as was Vlade Divac. But they can get decent bigmen with their two high second round picks.
With the three top point guards off the board already, the Lakers will take...
They draft: Jarrett Jack, PG, Georgia Tech, Ju.
Why?: Jack has the size and skills to run the triangle offense. When the Lakers are going against teams with small PGs, he could use his size in the post, although this will rarely be seen, but its possible. He has the ability to find the open man and can take it to the hole with his size and still be able to kick it out to a player like Caron Butler or even Kobe Bryant.
He also is a very good defender, like the previously picked Deron Williams. He can use his size to disrupt what the other point guard wants to do on offense.
He's not a point guard to build around, but would be a perfect compliment to Kobe. Once he improves his shot, he will bring the Lakers back to prominence. It just won't be next year.
11. Orlando Magic .
Team needs: SF, SG, C.
Reasons: The Magic started out strong, but fizzled late in the season. This has Steve Francis considering the move to shooting guard to play alongside Jameer Nelson, going with a smaller but quicker back court.
SG is a concern because Doug Christie is entering the last year of his contract and the is no immediate replacement for him. The Magic don't have the cap room to sign a player like, say, Cuttino Mobley. But the can get one in the draft. A player that can play either position would be best. The Magic may be reaching a little bit, but they will take...
They draft: Danny Granger, SF, New Mexico, Se.
Why?: A player this polished for his size doesnt come very often. A solid 6'8, Granger was forced to play as a power forward since he's from a smaller school.
But that is only a positive because of his shot, he can either step out on bigger small forwards like himself or post up on smaller forwards. He also has the potential to play shooting guard. With his size, a typical shooting guard may have a hard time getting his shot up over him. One knock against Granger is his ball-handling. Because he played in the post, he never got the chance to work on his handles. He has been working on it though in preparation for the draft, hoping to impress a lottery team. Another knock is because he's a senior, unlike most lottery picks, there isn't much more room to grow. The Magic don't necessarily need an All-Star. They already have two, and a future All-Star in Dwight Howard. Orlando could use someone like him to play alongside Howard and Nelson for years to come. Good thing they get their player.
12. Los Angeles Clippers .
Team needs: SG, SF, C.
Reasons: Things just haven't worked out for the Clippers. What has happened? Bad drafts and not resigning their picks have hurt any chances of postseason play for them. It's a shame because Elton Brand could use the limelight to show that there is a reason to watch the Clippers. The main concern is at the swingman position, either shooting guard or small forward. Bobby Simmons became the Most Improved Player this season, but they could lose him in the off season because he's an unrestricted free agent. They would like to keep him. It has been rumored that they want to trade Corey Maggette so Simmons can play his natural position, but Maggette still has some years left on his contract, so it may be hard to deal him.
The other need is center. The Clippers have not gotten anything out of Kaman but some good games here and there. They are about to lose Chris Wilcox to free agency. Besides those two, the other centers this year were journeymen Mikki Moore and Zeljko Rebraca. But the need more depth at the two and three spot. Even though Granger is off the board, there is another player that can play either position available.
They draft: Antoine Wright, SG, Texas A&M, Ju.
Why?: Wright is the best bet at this position and still has room to grow overall. He was projected as a lottery pick after his freshman season, but decided to stay in school. He struggled his sophomore year, but regrouped last season and once again proved that he has the tools to play either shooting guard or small forward at the next level. He can drive or pull up for his very accurate jumper. One knock against him is that he's inconsistent. There are some games where he showed why he's a lottery pick and other where he disappears altogether. Considering that he's a good defender and he still has some potential stashed in him, Los Angeles would make the right pick by taking him here.
13. Charlotte Bobcats (from Cleveland).
Team needs: PG, PF,C.
Reasons: They already addressed their PG needs. They will now focus on the best bigman to add depth behind Okafor and Brezec. See as how the draft has gone, one player who was ranked as a top ten prospect slipped to them because of some concerns about his size.
Charlotte lucks out and get the steal of the lottery.
They draft: Fran Vasquez, PF/C, Unicaja Malaga, 22 yrs.
Why?: Getting an athletic Euro who's not afraid of contact is very rare, especially if he falls all the way to Charlotte's 2nd pick. He's very thick for his size and has a lot of potential to become a major contributor. He's a team player, using screens to get others open and uses his athleticism to get by slower defenders. He can run the floor very well, and could see some success using this against slower centers or power forwards. Running with a player like Felton can only get him easy baskets. His main knock is that he doesn't have the potential to become a bona fide superstar like other PFs and Cs in this draft. But he's a very hard worker and would show Bickerstaff and co. why they made the right selection.
14. Minnesota Timberwolves .
Team needs: PG, SF, PF, C.
Reasons: After having an abysmal season due to very high expectations, the T'Wolves were not able to make it to the playoffs. Injuries to Sam Cassell and griping from Latrell Sprewell hurt any chance they had in the postseason. Minnesota needs help in a lot of areas. Cassell is 35 years old and may never become the player he once was. Troy Hudson hasn't panned out ever since he was signed away from Orlando. Point guard would be the best solution, but with the top 4 point guards already taken, there is a big drop off between Jack and Roko Leni-Ukic, the top international point and best available. But they need to address the center position. The Big Ticket, Kevin Garnett, has not had a good center beside him. In order to relieve some pressure off Garnett, the T'Wolves will either go with best available or best bigman. Since the rest of the bigs left either have more negatives than positives, Minnesota will go with the best available and take...
They draft: Joey Graham, SF, Oklahoma State, Se.
Why?: With Sprewell a free agent, Graham would give Minnesota more flexibility at the wing, being able to play Wally and Trenton Hassell alongside the most athletic of the 3, Graham. A very thick player for his size, Graham uses his athleticism to get by his defender and rise up over the approaching bigman for his shot. He rebounds exceptionally well for a player at his position. While Graham has the tools to plays small forward, he is still a year or so away from fully being able to contribute at the wing. Garnett and Minnesota would have to wait, but would reap the benefits after that season.
15. New Jersey Nets .
Team needs: PF, SG.
Reasons: After sliding into the playoffs on the last day of the regular season, NJ lost four straight games to the Miami Heat to send them on an early vacation.
New Jersey acquired Vince Carter for essentially a couple of draft picks, but still have their own this year. They have a very good starting five, but after that is when things start to fall off. Jason Collins would be better coming off the bench, but is forced to start due to NJ not having anyone behind him and Nenad Krstic. They could also use more depth at either shooting guard or small forward. The Nets' chances of making the playoffs were crushed when Richard Jefferson was lost for the season, but they were able to make it in a weaker conference. The Nets would be wise to go best available player, but the potential of a power forward is too much to pass up.
They draft: Charlie Villanueva, PF, Connecticut, So.
Why?: Villanueva already has the offensive game to play at the next level, but the main knocks against him is that he doesn't play defense and that he doesn't always play his best. This would not fly under Head Coach Lawrence Frank. Villanueva has the potential to become one the hardest match ups in the league because of his size and offensive ability, but if he doesn't figure out that playing 100% on just one end of the court doesn't cut it in the NBA, then he will have a very short career. If Frank could get him to get his head in the game, then the sky's the limit.
16 Toronto Raptors (from Philadelphia).
Team needs: C, PG.
Reasons: Thanks to a deal that was originally sending this pick to Denver in a three-way trade, Toronto receives one of New Jersey's 1st rounders. Already drafting for size, the next need is finding a healthy and consistent backup and possible replacement for Alston. Which they find in another international player.
They draft: Roko Leni-Ukic, PG, KK Split, 21 yrs.
Why?: Leni-Ukic is the tallest point guard in the draft. He's also one the best because he's a pure point guard. He can get his teammates the ball in the best spot, making it easier for them to get a good shot. But he can take it to the hole. One concern though is that he isn't very strong, so he may have a hard time getting to the hole against stronger guards like Chauncey Billups and even some of points in this draft, like Jack and Deron Williams. Once he ads some strength to his tall frame, then he should have no problem being able to play in the NBA. In case, with Toronto.
17. Indiana Pacers .
Teams needs: SG, SF, C.
Reasons: The brawl left their team decimated. Losing Ron Artest to suspension for the season and Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson for 15 and 30 games, respectively, hurt their chances of being able to contend. It didn't help matter that O'Neal separated his shoulder late in the season. But under the most underrated coach in the NBA, Rick Carlisle, the Pacers were able to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals with a retiring shooting guard and no center behind Jeff Foster. With Reggie Miller retiring and Jonathan Bender becoming a huge question mark, the biggest need is to add depth to the 2 and 3. There aren't many big men worth drafting here. Sean May is a possibility, but is too undersized for Indiana. So the most logical choice is...
They draft: Hakim Warrick, SF, Syracuse, Se.
Why?: Warrick possesses unbelievable athleticism for a player his size. He can drive it on his defender, or he can pull up for his improving jumper. The one knock against him, besides being considered a tweener, is he hasn't shown teams in private workouts that he can do more that just dunk. Once he adds some strength to his frame, Warrick will become a capable defender and offensive player as a small forward. Even though he is too small for the power forward position, with Indiana, he would give Carlisle the ability to go small with O'Neal at center, himself at forward, either Artest or Jackson at the 3, someone like Fred Jones at the 2 and Tinsley at the point.
18. Boston Celtics .
Team needs: PG, SF, C.
Reasons: The Celtics got to the playoffs again but couldnt get past the Pacers, even with a newly acquired Antoine Walker, who they got for Tom Gugliotta! Even with him and Gary Payton, the Celtics could not do it, but their three first rounders from last year stepped up. This year they will look for adding depth at the point and swingman positions, as well as possibly getting insurance for Raef Lafrentz.
But getting a high school prospect with tons of potential so late is too hard to pass up.
They draft: Martell Webster, SG, Seattle Prep, HS Se.
Why?: Getting a high school player for the future to play alongside Delonte West, Tony Allen and Al Jefferson would be GM Danny Ainge's dream come true.
He would become the eventual replacement for Paul Pierce, the greatest shooting guard of all time for the city of Boston. Webster possesses a deadly jump shot for a player his age and can get up over bigger players. The only concern is that he can't contribute right away. But with Boston being so deep, he won't have to. This year, he would spot minutes behind Pierce, but would get playing time, nonetheless. By his third year, he will prove to teams that passed on him that he was worth taking with a higher pick.
19. Memphis Grizzlies
Team needs: PG, C.
Reasons: After being swept out of the playoffs, it was rumored that Memphis was trying to sell their pick or possibly trade it along with Jason Williams. A team currently out of the first round may be interested in the pick, but not Williams. The Grizzlies may end up having to select insurance for either a bolting Stromile Swift or free agent Earl Watson. Since Memphis may not make the playoffs next year because the newly revamped Golden State Warriors , GM Jerry West may pick for the future and take...
They draft: Randolph Morris, C, Kentucky, Fr.
Why?: Memphis needs a center to play alongside Gasol for years to come. With current starter Lorenzen Wright only having two years left on his deal, it would give Morris two years to become Wright's replacement. He is bless with great size for a center.
Think Jamaal Magloire, but not as rugged. He possesses a potentially deadly 10-15 turnaround jumper that's very hard to block. He uses his body to create enough space from his defender to get it off. It's gotten to the point where he can even be a little further away from the basket, but it would still go in. He also has a knack for getting to the free throw line. But one concern is hes still a couple years away. He may face trouble establishing position against some of the better centers in the league. Memphis could use this to their advantage, playing him against backup players here and there until he's ready to become a full-time contributor. Once he is, he would flourish alongside Gasol to from one of the better front courts in the league.
20. Denver Nuggets (from Washington)
Team needs: SG, PG.
Reasons: In the first game of the season, the Nuggets lost starting shooting guard Voshon Leonard to a torn ACL for the season. They had to settle with players like Dermarr Johnson, Quinn Buckner and Bryon Russell to fill in. They even went with starting point guard Andre Miller at the two, bringing 5'5 Earl Boykins in to play the point. Denver may address shooting guard in free agency and go with insurance at the 4 or 5 in case they lose Nene to free agency. They also have another first round pick after Phoenix, so they address their need for a shooting guard there. Looking at the players left, they decide to go big.
They draft: Andray Blatche, PF, South Kent Prep, HS Se.
Why?: Blatche is a KG clone but playing more on the wing than in the post. Long and versatile coming out of high school, Blatche was named the co-MVP of the Jordan Classic, scoring 26 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. He has the potential to become a player on both the wing and in the post due his versatility and athleticism. His main knock is that he hasnt shown that he can play in the post.
Some teams would rather have a player his size play in the post. He also needs to bulk up to compete with the power forwards he would have to face (Duncan, KG, Brand, just to name a few). But Denver would be getting a player that play with Carmelo Anthony for years to come.
21. Phoenix Suns (from Chicago)
Team needs: C, SF.
Reasons: Still in the playoffs, Phoenix can't look to the draft until after the season is over, but there are holes to fill. They need to fill out their bench and add a center to allow Amare Stoudemire to play at his natural position, PF. They could acquire a player like Dan Gadzuric through free agency, but would risk losing Joe Johnson in he process, something that both Jerry and Bryan Colangelo have said won't happen.
Looking at the players available, they may add a front court player. There is an Italian left, someone Head Coach Mike D'Antoni may have ties to.
They draft: Angelo Gigli, PF, Bipop Carire Reggio Emilia, 21 yrs.
Why?: The Suns already play an international-type offense, sharing the ball and using movement to get open shots. Gigli would be perfect for this system. He already has the shot, so he would free up space down low for Amare to muscle his way to the free throw line and to the basket. He has an adequate low-post game, using his size to get his turnaround jumper off. A smart player like this would fit Phoenix perfectly.
His main knocks are his body and buyout with his team.
His body is not strong enough to bang down low with the prototypical power forwards of the league. His buyout could also be a problem. In order for him to stay in the draft, he would need to be picked very high because teams can only pay $350,000 of the players buyout. His is rumored to be around $1.5 million. If he were to get picked this low, he would be giving up his entire rookie salary and still owe his team money. He may not want to be getting very little playing time for free. But if he were to get picked here, he would be satisfied playing for a coach with such an established international background.
22. Denver Nuggets .
Team Needs: SG, PG, C.
Reasons: Already addressing their bigman situation, they would go with a guard at this spot. The player that would be able to step in and play right now would be...
They draft: Francisco Garcia, SG/SF, Louisville, Ju.
Why?: Garcia is one of the smartest players in this draft. He has a great basketball IQ, learning the game from Rick Pitino, one of the best college coaches in the nation. He has an awkward release on his jump shot, but it goes in. He can run the point, but with a team like Denver, he wouldn't be asked to, although he could. His main weakness is his strength. He will get pushed around by some of the bigger guards in the league. He will be able to handle it, but it may affect his game on the offensive end. If he can overcome this, then he should have a very long career.
23. Sacramento Kings .
Team needs: SG, PF, C.
Reasons: Sacramento entered the playoffs with two of their main players coming off injuries. They werent able to overcome a deep Seattle team, losing in 5 games. Shooting guard Cuttino Mobley recently stated that he will opt out of his contract with Sacramento and enter free agency. Power forward Darius Songaila has stated the same thing. After trading Chris Webber to Philly, they added depth to the front court, but it wasn't enough to overcome Brad Miller's broken leg.
The team will needs to address the shooting guard position. Their first rounder last year, Kevin Martin, saw very little playing time, and it is unknown if he will enter training camp as the starting shooting guard. If Sacramento lets Maurice Evans go as well, then they will definitely draft a 2.
They draft: Kennedy Winston, SG, Alabama, Ju.
Why?: Winston is the logical choice and the best available. He can flat out score. He would fit perfectly into the Princeton offense, coming off screens to get easy and open look, like Peja Stojakovic does with ease. His main weakness is that he is only a scorer. He can't get his teammates involved, things like that. He would need to share the ball in Sacramento's offense if he ever wants the ball to come his way. If he can improve that side of his game, then he would become a very good player for Sacramento.
24. Houston Rockets
Team needs: SG, PF.
Reasons: Houston made some very key trades in the middle of the season to add veteran guards onto their squad, but it wasn't enough to beat Dallas in the first round. Age was crucial to Houston's success, and their age showed against a much younger Mavericks team. It also hurt when they lost power forward Juwan Howard for the season to an injury. Both positions are key to fill, but since they have a 4 waiting overseas to come over, they will address the 2. Good thing there is a good Euro still available.
They draft: Rudy Fernandez, SG, DKV Joventut, 20 yrs.
Why?: With great handles and a good shot, Fernandez has what Houston needs at the 2: youth and size. He can penetrate or spot up for the jumper. He may not be given the freedom to drive considering he would be playing alongside McGrady, but he would still get his shots in Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy's offense. He would also get playing tim immediately due to David Wesley and Jon Barry becoming free agents this summer. His main weakness is he's not as big as the other shooting guards in the draft. He's also not as strong, but if he brings his shot over with him, he would have no problem getting playing time with Houston.
25. Seattle Supersonics
Team needs: PG, SG, PF.
Why?: Seattle had a cinderella season this year. They would've been the team in the spotlight if it wasn't for Nash and those Suns. Coming into this draft, they have a lot of cap room, but that's only because they have more than half their team unsigned through next season. The name that sticks out the most is Ray Allen. If they can't resign him, then may go with the cheaper alternative, Ronald Murray. Backup point guard Antonio Daniels has said he will test free agency this summer as well. But Seattle will look to add size with Reggie Evans becoming a free agent. Since they already have Danny Fortson and Nick Collison, they don't need Evans, but neither of those 4s have a great low post game. Enter...
They draft: Ronny Turiaf, PF, Gonzaga, Se.
Why?: What would Seattle be thinking? Drafting their third straight 4 or 5? Turiaf is too good to pass up.
He can score in the low post. Robert Swift, their lottery pick last year, is still a year or two away and both Fortson and Collison can't score down low like Turiaf. He is physical and willing to mix it up.
At 6'10", he has the size to compete with the bigger power forwards in the league. His main weakness is he doesn't have a shot. He has missed some easy shots more than once in a game, and many teams are afraid that this could carryover into the NBA. He's also foul prone, but the NBA gives one more foul, so he could see more time than he did at Gonzaga. But he's ready to play now. He can play in their system, granted they resign Head Coach Nate McMillan, which they would be fools not to. He's the type of player that can succeed in Seattle, especially playing so close to his college.
26. Detroit Pistons
Team needs: SG, SF, C.
Reasons: With the Pistons proving that even without a bench as deep as last year, Joe Dumars is looking like a genius. He is a genius, getting Carlos Arroyo for nothing and being able to mold a team into a winner.
Detroit isn't focused on the draft, but they will be thinking about where they need an upgrade. Another center or 4 is likely because Brown was once again unwilling to give Darko Milicic playing time, convincing everyone that Darko is a bust. But he isn't even 20. He's still younger than some college juniors coming out of school for the draft. But they would like another player to help out Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace. A swingman is possible, too. Carlos Delfino was right next to Darko for most of the year, although he was injured for a good part of the season.
They may just go with a swingman for insurance. But Dumars goes for size.
They draft: Wayne Simien, PF, Kansas, Ju.
Why?: Simien is a two-time All-American. Detroit can get away with drafting an undersized power forward because can. Simien can score down low. Period. He has been injury-prone, but when he's healthy, he plays very well, usually getting 15+ points and 10+ rebounds. The main problem is his size. Can he get the same shots he got in college over some of the taller and bigger players? If he's playing against the Knicks, he'll have no problem. But not every team has an abundance of small power forwards. He will succeed, but only against forwards coming off the bench. He may never become a starting power forward, but he is too good to not be on an NBA team. Detroit would benefit greatly from Simien, getting immediate help from him.
27. Utah Jazz (from Dallas)
Team needs: PG, C.
Reasons: Since they already got their future point guard, they will look for a center, where they have had trouble with in the past. Mehmet Okur played well last season, not Utah was expecting more, especially when Carlos Boozer went down for the season. When healthy, they have one of the better front courts, but their bench can be upgraded. They are also losing shooting guard Raja Bell, who, rumored, will be heavily courted by the Miami Heat . They could add depth to the back court, as well. But they go big.
They draft: Erazem Lorbek, PF/C, Climamio Bologna, 21 yrs.
Why?: After playing one season at Michigan State, Lorbek decided to go back to Europe. Turns out he made the right choice. Offensively, he can shoot from anywhere inside the international three, or go down low for a hook shot or turnaround jumper. He is a smart player with a good basketball IQ, and going back to Europe only added more uniqueness to his game. He knows where the ball is at, which for some players at his age still can't work without the ball. His main weakness is that he is slow. He will have a hard time competing defensively with the Chris Wilcox's of the NBA. But under a system like Utah's, he could see immediate success.
28. San Antonio.
Team Needs: C, SF, PF.
Reasons: San Antonio is a powerhouse, built for the playoffs. Unlike most teams, they can draft players that fit their system. Beno Udrih is a perfect example. Some people said that he could not play in a system. He has only blossomed under the coaching of Greg Popovich, winning the Rookie of the Month award in December. They also drafted Manu Ginobili with the second to last pick. IN THE ENTIRE DRAFT! This year, they will bring in Luis Scola, a teammate of Ginobili's on the Olympic team that won the Gold Medal. They will get a very good player, albeit undersized, here.
They draft: Ike Diogu, PF, Arizona State.
Why?: Getting such a force so late would only prove why the Spurs are consistently one of the best teams in the League. Diogu is very polished down low, but can shoot the midrange shot, also. One thing that separates himself from some of the other 4's in this draft is that he uses his body to get position wherever he wants, whenever he wants. His only knock is his size. Being 6'8, Diogu is very thick, but small to contend with other forwards in the NBA. He will have trouble against some of the bigger players.
But playing alongside Tim Duncan would give him open looks. All the time.
29. Miami Heat
Team needs: PG, SF, PF.
Reasons: Miami is enjoying what the Lakers gave to them. Shaq has turned this team into a Finals contender for years to come. They still have their holes. Small forward is the biggest. Even though they drafted Dorell Wright out of high school last year, he got almost no playing time this season. Eddie Jones is getting older. Rasual Butler failed to lock down the starting spot at the beginning of the season. The pint guard spot could use improvement, as well. Behind Damon Jones is Keyon Dooling, who, before the playoffs, got very little playing time. They could draft a point guard to backup Jones, but getting another swingman for the future is key.
They draft: Mickael Gelabele, SG/SF, Real Madrid, 22 yrs.
Why?: Gelabele is one of the best swingmen playing in Europe right now. He is more athletic than most of his opponents, and it shows on the court. He can drive to the hoop using his speed and ball-handling. He plays with intensity on both ends of the floor, something very few players do. He has an accurate jumper out to 20 feet. If he were playing in college here, he would be a lottery pick. However, being from France, Gelabele has not gotten the exposure most players have gotten. His main knock is that he's still a little thin. He can't get rebounds against his competition, so most teams have shied away from him. But if he were given the playing time and confidence, he could become a very good player. Especially playing with Dwayne Wade.
30. New York Knicks (from San Antonio)
Team needs: C, C, C.
Reasons: Knick fan only wish they didn't have to have this pick from San Antonio. They'd rather have this pick from being the best team, not from trading their starting center whose contract expires next season for another undersized power forward, Rose. But if Isiah Thomas can turn this team around through the draft, then it won't be very long until they have this pick without getting it in a trade. The Knicks already addressed this with their lottery pick, but they still need more size to compete in the East. It may not look like it, but the tide is starting to rise in the East.
New York wants to be a part of that. There is still a very good, and tall, player available that can play now while Petro develops.
They draft: Channing Frye, PF/C, Arizona, Se.
Why?: Frye improved his stock with a great NCAA tournament. If it wasn't for the influx of international players and high school players, he would be a lottery pick. 10 years ago, but he would've been drafted in the lottery. Frye possesses a great shooting touch for a 7 footer. He can step out beyond 15 feet and make his shot. Most centers would let him have it. He is very quick, too. He can get to loose balls a lot faster than most centers can. His main weakness is his strength. He has added a lot since his freshman year, but it's not enough for the NBA. The only problem with adding size is it may take away from what makes him stand out. If he adds size, he can body up against other centers, but he would then become one of them. If he can add bulk without losing any of his quickness, then the Knicks would have a very good player at a spot so late.
