Με τον Sagadin (παρέα με τον Filipovski) πλέον η Ολίμπια μας περιμένει την Πέμπτη

QUOTE
A classic Euroleague club and its signature figure of the last two decades are reuniting. Union Olimpija has officially communicated that Zmago Sagadin will rejoin the club, according to a letter given to Slovenian media. Sagadin was at Olimpija's practice on Tuesday and is expected to meet the press on Wednesday night, just 24 hours before the team hosts AEK in a Group A game. What is not completely clear yet is Sagadin's official role, because he is bringing with him Saso Filipovski, who was Olimpija's head coach the last two seasons and Sagadin's assistant for several others. Filipovski and Olimpija parted ways after last season and he was replaced in the summer by Pino Grdovic, who resigned November 21 after Olimpija lost its 10th game in a row between the Euroleague and the Adriatic League. Assistant coach Denis Bajramovic was on the bench last week as Olimpija lost again, against Euroleague newcomer Strasbourg, to drop to 0-4 in Group A. Sagadin, 51, returns to the club that he led to great heights during 15 seasons between 1985 to 2002, reacing the 1997 Final Four while also winning the Adriatic League once and the Slovenian League eight times. Sagadin also built Olimpija's reputation as a talent farm, attracting young players to Ljubljana from many countries to get their careers started with Olimpija

UNION OLIMPIJA vs. AEK ATHENS

Game 5
Preview Ljubljana, Slovenia
Dvorana Tivoli
20:45 CET
December 1
2005

With its coaching situation still in flux one day before the game, Union Olimpija will nonetheless try to give its fans a first Group A win of the season when it hosts AEK Athens on Thursday in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Union Olimpija (0-4) started the season with a pair of narrow defeats, but then lost by 17 at home to Tau Vitoria in Week 3, leading to the resignation of coach Pino Grdovic. This week, former Olimpija head coaches Zmago Sagadin and Saso Filipovski were reunited with the team in hopes of trying to rescue the situation. They both were present at Tuesday's practice, run by interim coach Denis Bajramovic. Another team looking for a change, at least to its fortunes on the road, is AEK (2-2), which has lost both its away games by a total of 48 points. Last week at Tau, AEK opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but faded afterwards, eventually scoring just 8 points in the whole fourth quarter of a 77-62 defeat. One player who AEK hopes can help change its fortunes is new point guard Lionel Chalmers, who has been registered to play against Olimpija. Until now, the point guard position has been manned by Spiros Panteliadis (10 ppg., 2.7 apg.) and defensive-minded Dror Hagag (4.5 ppg.). It remains to be seen what changes the new Olimpija coaches will make, but it is certain that they will need to play to the team's strength – its guards. More than half of Olimpija's points come from its guard trio of Jimmy Oliver (18 ppg.), Yotam Halperin (11.7 ppg., 4.7 apg.) and Teemu Rannikko (12.7 ppg.). The only inside player to score considerably so far has been Szymon Szewczyk (11 ppg.), but Olimpija's problems have a lot more to do with defense. Its 84 points allowed per game is the most in the Euroleague and its 26.3 rebounds per game are the least. Szewczyk and Vasco Evitmov (8.7 ppg, 6 rpg.) will have their hands full against the waves of big men that AEK brings with Yiannis Bouroussis (8 ppg., 7.2 rpg.), Taylor Coppenwrath (8.2 ppg.), Amit Tamir and Panteleimon Papaeikoim, even though they have not helped the team do much better than Olimpja on the boards (26.8 rpg.). Hagag may have a big role to fill as AEK will need to attack the Olimpija ballhandlers and keep the score low, making his experience against his Israeli nation teammate, Halperin, potentially valuable. If Chalmers is also ready to add something in his first game, AEK might stay close and have a chance for its first road win against an underconfident Olimpija team feeling heavy pressure to win its first game before the home fans.

Denis BAJRAMOVIC
(interim coach)

"This won't be easy.

"The situation in the club isn't good. We have 10 losses in our last 11 games and if we lose against AEK, the situation will be even worse. Of course, we want to win, but this won't be easy. Even though AEK is the favorite, we want to pull off our first Euroleague victory."

Lefteris KAKIOUSIS

"Their four losses in a row shouldn't deceive us."

"We are facing a very dangerous team that is searching for a win to come back. Union Olimpija is a team with Eurolegaue experience and now that we play in their home court, our mission is difficult. Their four losses in a row shouldn't deceive us, and definitely we have to give our best to escape with an important win. The key is to stop their perimeter players, especially Jimmy Oliver, who take most of the shots, although Olimpija has inside strength too, and we need to take care of it as well."

Remon VAN DER HARE
Center

"We will do everything possible to not disappoint our fans."

"The team is going through a tough moment, which makes the game against AEK very important. A victory would be the perfect path to take out of this losing streak. But we all know that to beat AEK, we have to give our maximum, because the Greeks have a good team, strong in every aspect, making them the clear favorites in this game. But we will do everything possible to not disappoint our fans again."

Giannis KALAMPOKIS
Guard

"We are as hungry as they are."

"This game against Olimpija looks like a good opportunity to achieve our first road win, but to make it happen we need to play as hard as we can. We know they have no wins so far, but that is not a reason to make us feel comfortable. They have a good team and they are looking forward to accomplishing their first Euroleague victory, but we are as hungry as they are and we have prepared ourselves for a big fight. Hopefully, we will have one more player, Lionel Chalmers, who is ready to help in organizing and executing our offense."

Τα ίδια (& αναμενόμενα) συμπτώματα all over again...

Olimpija head coach Zmago Sagadin
"Even though we could only prepare this game for a couple days it was crucial to us and we won it, which boosts us to work even more. In the Euroleague you can only win with an aggressive defense. The final difference is too much for what was seen on court. In the last minutes my players were very nervous but we finiehd it off well. Now a lot of work is ahead of us because we have lost nothing yet. With a series of wins we can aspire to the Top 16."

Olimpija forward Dragisa Drobnjak
"The kids started to play in defense and all could see the result. It is a very important win for everybody because now we all know we can advance thanks to hard work."

Olimpija center Vasco Evtimov
"Thanks to our fans. They have demonstrated that they are with the club in the toughest moments. It is a very important win from a psychological point of view as the series of losses afected our morale."

AEK head coach Lefteris Kakiousis
"We had the opportunity to win, but in the last quarter we left too much space to Olimpija players which they punished with a couple of triples. The concentration was not at a desirable level in the decisive moments."

AEKr guard Slaven Rimac
"We deserved to win as we didn't play good defense in the last quarter. I wish Olimpija all the best for the future."

AEK guard Spiros Panteliadis
"The home team showed more will for the win than us. It was a balanced game and when you get to that situation in the last minutes, the host has the advantage. We didn't know how to stop Olimpija's outside shooting in the last quarter."

Trouble brewing for Hajaj

By Yoav Borowitz and Offer Matan

Dror Hajaj was the Cinderella story of Israeli basketball last summer. Endless compliments were heaped on the 1.78-meter guard, who led Leuven to the Belgian Cup last season and played a pivotal role in Israel's successful European Championship run in Serbia, where he was cited by commentators on the continent as one of the surprises of the tournament.

The former Hapoel Tel Aviv player had signed for AEK Athens prior to the European Championship for a reported $130,000 a season. Athens had been looking for an American guard; however, with no one signed, Hajaj was a starter on Kakiousi Lefteris' team and shared the playmaker role with Spiros Panteliadis.

Things started out well for Hajaj, who hit seven points agains Strasbourg and 11 against Bologna in the club's opening two Euroleague games. Now he is going through a bad spell with no points for AEK in its league win against Rhodes and a Euroleague win over Zalgiris.

There is more trouble on the horizon for Hajaj, who will return from a Euroleague road trip to Tau Vitoria this week to find a new starting guard taking his place - Lionel Chalmers, a Xavier College graduate, who spent last season with the L.A. Clippers.

Greek sports daily Sport Time published a report this week claiming that Hajaj could be headed to Maccabi Tel Aviv, a report denied by the Euroleague champion and the player's agent

"Hajaj was weak against Rhodes and Zalgiris because he was very tired," says Greek sports writer Dimitris Christianis who covers AEK for Sport Day. "The club has had a very busy schedule and Hajaj needs time to take a rest. After a great start to the season, he hasn't been at his best for the past three or four games. You can't forget that he hasn't rested since Eurobasket, and he participated in a last-chance qualifying tournament before that. I think that Dror is a little concerned about Chalmers arrival at AEK because then he will get less court time. But he knew when he signed that he would play second fiddle to an American player."

Israel coach Zvika Sherf wasn't impressed by claims of fatigue. "Half the players in Europe returned exhausted from Eurobasket. Hajaj has been given the chance of a lifetime. Instead of being on the bench, he is a starter and he needs to do everything he can to hold on to that."
