QUOTE(Emanuel David Ginobili @ Oct 7 2009, 03:16 )

Giddens’s minutes to come with time
J.R. GIDDENS
Knows his role
By Gary Washburn

J.R. Giddens is coming off his rookie year with the Celtics, if you want to call it that. He played in six NBA games last season as the organization stashed him in the NBA Development League to give him professional experience because his role with the big club would have been minimal.
Training camp serves as an opportunity for Giddens to prove he belongs in Boston. It may be at the end of the bench with limited minutes or in garbage time. But Giddens said he is determined to prove he has learned Doc Rivers’s system and is capable of playing strong defense, setting a pick, or making the good pass, the unglamorous roles younger players generally fill for Rivers.
Kendrick Perkins had to prove he was capable of making a contribution, so did Glen “Big Baby’’ Davis. Now, it is Giddens’s turn. Freakish athletic skills and scoring prowess will only help him so much in his quest to become a productive NBA player because the Celtics already have their share of scorers and Rivers would rather have a steal or tipped pass than a flashy dunk.
“He’s gotten better, I think defensively he’s gotten much better,’’ Rivers said yesterday following practice at The Sports Authority Training Center. “He’s still young and the veterans take advantage of that youth but athletically he’s an NBA defender, there’s no doubt about that. Mentally, he still needs to grow. He has made, in my opinion, tremendous strides.’’
Rivers emphasized that Giddens would be difficult to guard one-on-one, but he struggles with the five-on-five game, especially decision-making. That is what perhaps keeps Giddens from more playing time.
The former New Mexico standout and Mountain West Co-Player of the Year understands his NBA success is going to come gradually and with hard work, and he has accepted that responsibility.
“Every situation I’ve been in, I’ve always had to earn everything,’’ he said. “I’m on a team with a lot of superstars, a lot of veterans, so right now I’m just playing my role being a young guy just trying to learn, be a sponge and soak up everything so one day I can be a go-to player.’’
With Bill Walker’s injury and Tony Allen’s meticulous surgery recovery, Giddens may have more of an opportunity to seize key minutes off the bench spelling Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. With the addition of Marquis Daniels, the Celtics appeared set in the backup guard position, so Giddens will have to work for minutes.
“Everybody obviously has goals for themselves,’’ he said. “I just know as a young guy I am going to stay focused. I feel defensively, that’s where I’m most comfortable. I’m learning every day and being in situations now that I get a lot of playing time in practice.’’
The Celtics are taking a sincere look at Giddens, who played 26 games with the Utah Flash last season, averaging 17.2 points. And his teammates have embraced his enthusiasm and work ethic.
“They treat me a little differently, I am older now and they have gotten used to me,’’ he said. “Even if I do get minutes, I am not going to be a guy who’s a go-to player, so I am going to have to play defense, rebound and bring energy, and just knock down open shots. You’ve got to start somewhere, if I was on a team that didn’t have a championship mentality and there’s a lot of other young guys, maybe I would be offended, but I am behind Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, it would be ignorant not to yield to that experience.’’
